Donde: Ubicado en el malecón de La Paz Calypso Restaurante es un lugar diferente.

Sé que suena cliché pero permítanme explicar el porque:

La decoración es de playa y contemporánea. Las mesas en el área de la entrada son con tema casual y donde podrán encontrar detalles muy únicos incluyendo una mesita para el catsup y la mostaza, las macetas, chanclas por todos lados. Más adelante, pueden disfrutar de sus deliciosos mezcalinis (como martinis, pero con mezcal) si buscan algo after office o directamente sentarse en la barra después de un día de playa.

El menú está conformado por entradas, variedad de ceviches (mi favorito es el de callo con crema de coco y mango), hamburguesas y pizzas cocinadas en horno de leña, mulitas aka burritos (prueben el aloha o el calypso) y los chanwiz. Aquí la foto del ceviche.

Para rematar la comilonga, pedí un café. Y esto fue lo que me trajeron (10 a la presentación):

Otros puntos a favor: Vayan con hambre porque las porciones están grandes. El servicio es ágil y atento. Rampa de acceso para personas discapacitadas. Tiene valet parking. Precios competitivos. Y servicio a domicilio woo hoo!

Ojo: La términal de la TC no funciona. Vayan preparados con efectivo.

Todos Santos Music Fest 2012

Desafortunadamente no pude atender los conciertos del Festival de Música de Todos Santos éste año... pero alcancé a ir al cierre del mismo con algunos de mis amigos. Sabía que iba ser un evento abierto al público y honestamente no esperaba tener un buen lugar aunque, a la mera hora, nos tocó estar AL PIE DEL ESCENARIO! Todo estaba muy bien organizado, se escuchaba bien, un ambiente tranquilo y en pro de la Fundación de la Palapa para recaudar fondos para becas. Les dejo aquí un video y fotos adicionales. Ya quiero que sea el del próximo año!

Unfortunately I couldn´t attend the concerts at the Todos Santos Music Festival this year... but I was able to go on the last day with some friends. I knew it would be public on the plaza and honestly I didn´t expect to have a great spot and then we were AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STAGE! Everything was very well organized, great sound, peaceful environment and all the funds gathered were for the Fundación de La Palapa scholarships. Here´s a video and some additional pics. I can´t wait for the next year!

So... I´m back on the blog. I´m so sorry for leaving it unattended such a long time and of course, no excuses at all. Since the last time I wrote an article, so many great things have happened and that´s why I have more stuff to talk to you about.
The following one is, as you already read it, the story on the adventures of Pedregal de La Paz staff @ La Paz Gold Cup.
It took place the 3rd and 4th of October according to the plan. It was very pleasant to see familiar faces from the RE market and sharing with us the excitment (and weather) of the event. We were able to see some Pedregal clients, people from Bancomer, notarios, lawyers, etc. Above all, I´d like to dedicate this space to Sandra Felix, the PR girl who helped the Pedregal staff enormously, we wouldn´t have been able to work out the booth without her.

Early september Mr. and Mrs. John Hardisty, owners of lot 25 block 4 on the second phase bought their lot last year assisted by Gary Brasfield. Mr Hardisty, once in a while came back to see how was everything going and always talking to myself or other agents for a "community update". After a long time, he came back yesterday with his wife to see how the economical situation is affecting Pedregal de La Paz and I was on shift. I was very pleased to inform them about the average added value that Pedregal gains every year, how many people are currently building, who are becoming their neighbors, who have already delivered plans....and right after that he brought out his home floorplans with a big smile very very proud to share his future home.

He wants to sell his home in California to be a full time owner here. I gave them a floor plan of lots available. They felt very calmed after that chat and today they returned with 4 bottles of wine (special harvest by their neighbor´s vineyard), 2 for Gary and 2 me.

I asked them a picture for the newsletter and for the blog, they feel very confident with us as a team and their investment in Pedregal.

I just want to say that it is by days like today I love my job and specially love to be here.

La Paz Gold Cup...Black & Blue Marlin Competition

La Paz is very well know for its marinas and sport fishing. Since I was a kid I always went out for fishing with my dad and my sister everytime we were here at the Baja (summer vacation). We used to fish Dorado, tuna fish and one baby marlin once in Loreto (a very hard catch if I may say). Sometimes we would prepare our ceviche on board freshly caught with ketchup and krakers...just to remember that makes my mouth melt with the flashback.

So when Pedregal de La Paz was invited to sponsor a charity tournament with other well known developers it brought a lot of memories to me and personal satisfaction as well. I was pleased to see that sharing the premise to help and give to those who need the most of it. An adventure in the world's biggest aquarium, part I

It's been 4 years since I moved to La Paz and I am still amazed at the wonders this place continuously presents us. At this moment, and with the summer season coming on, I know it is time to start planning the best way to enjoy the sun and the beach. After a lot of thinking I just have to look through the window at Pedregal de La Paz's sales office to find the answer: The Cortez Club.
Just across the street from Pedregal is Hotel La Concha, a very nice beachfront hotel where The Cortez Club is located, visible from Pedregal. I can tell it is the perfect place to practice great water sport adventures. The Cortez Club is proud to be Baja California's only National Geographic PADI Five Star Gold Palm IDC Resort and Water sports Center. I have never tried anything like diving or waterskiing, so all the certifications are clearly important to me, assuring me of their qualifications, and to ensure my safety.
It was a sunny Saturday the day I visited the place and as usual, I love feeling the ocean breezes in my face as I approach the site. I am received by Ricardo Fifield, who's in charge of the sales office. I go into the office and was assured right away, seeing so many magazine covers with information about La Paz and water activities with their name in the top. I also see the National Geographic divers, an elite group of explorers, adventurers and conservationists, listed there.
The Cortez Club has been owned by James Curtiss for over 13 years and Ricardo has been working with him for the past 12 years. He's very friendly and very easy to talk to as he explains me all the activities you can do at the Club, such as scuba diving, diving, fishing, kayaking, sail boats, windsurf, wave runners, waterskiing and banana rides. If you're just a rookie like me or a professional in any of the activities described before, the staff is well trained, capable and knowledgeable. Because of their strategic alliances, they receive adventurers from all over the world throughout the 12 months of the year. To enjoy the wonders of the sea, there are no language barriers! Imagine being able to capture the sea's bounty with your own camera, diving into a sunken ship, or night diving... pretty cool right?
Mr. Fifield explained to me that the crew usually start their job at 5 am getting all the equipment ready and verifying everything is in order to get ready to depart, whether you're going for a fishing trip at 6 am, or going for a diving tour at 8 am. Once you're finished with the tours, the equipment is properly washed and stored once it's returned to the headquarters. I can tell everything is clean and in good shape as I go through the office. So after an enjoyable diving, skiing or swimming experience, you can go back to the Club where you are welcome to the Sunset bar and relax watching the sunset with your favorite drink.
I am curious about a painting outside of the office that says Adopt a Shark, hmmm... I wonder what does that mean.
Mr. Fifield tells me that The Cortez Club plays host to "Adopt a Shark" program of the Non-Profit Iemanya Oceanica. He gives me a small introduction about the role that the sharks play in ocean ecology and that it's also an endangered species; therefore they participate and promote the "Adopt a shark" program, contributing to shark research and conservation "tagging" with a special device the animals. Information on the location and movements of tagged sharks will provide important knowledge that will assist to make recommendations for the design of more effective conservation efforts and protective measures for shark. Through this program, you will receive a membership package that includes your Certificate of Shark Adoption, an Adopt a Shark T-shirt, post-cards, stickers and bumper sticker, and a subscription to their electronic newsletter. As we are about finished with our chat, I'm invited to go for a dive tour and of course, I just can't say no! So now I'm excited (and nervous) to know that my next appointment is in (the world's largest aquarium, the Sea of Cortez. La Paz Malecon...an endless affair with it

Ever since I was a little girl when I would come in the summer there´s been a place that really got my attention and this is the La Paz Malecon (seawalk).
As the prime image of the state´s capital this street has managed to be modern but still preserving its old classic Mexican charm. Built around 1920’s and remodeled in the early 2000´s this is one of the most important (if not THE MOST) street in La Paz which official name is Av. Alvaro Obregon. It has a length of 5km and along its way you´ll be able to find the most traditional hotels, waterfront restaurants, coffee shops and La Paz night life. You can still find the former commercial dock (MUELLE FISCAL) and a kiosk that dresses of festivity and colors everytime the occasion requires. It is actually used every weekend to host Mexican cultural events and also for regular cultural activities.
In 2005 the malecon was guernish with a mural painted by Wyland and which you can still see next to the Tax office…well, maybe not the best place to put such a magnificent and exquisite art piece but…well, very interesting to see. The Wyland wall, as it is know, celebrates the wonders of the Cortez sea, which holds around 39% of the world´s total number of marine mammal species . At the bottom of it, local kids helped painting and adding a touch of their own and which you can still see at these days. If I may say, I tell you that everytime I walk by, I stop and look up where my sight lets me and find a different animal. Quite amazing. On summer time, next to the wall, the local cultural and touristic ministry places some chairs and a screen where people is able to seat and enjoy a classical movie starred by our very own and immortal Pedro Infante on Saturday evening. And yes, of course, I sat there several times to shred a tear with my female colleagues enjoying the drama and the emotions held on his pictures and when I look around I´m so happy to not be the only one.
My favorite activity in the malecon is walking. You´ll be able to see people walking along 24 hrs. A day and touristic police are displayed assisting people from all over the world and to preserve safety as well and I´m proud to say that I´ve never EVER seen them required their justice services. Joggers and outdoor lovers are seen starting at 5.30 am and maybe after finishing their work out routine they stop by at the coffeshops to have a fresh brewed cup. Sometimes, you´ll see the dolphins on the bay.
And if you´re coming in the evening, you´ll see entire families walking with their pets, bikes, skates and some lonely walkers with their mp3 players as their only companions. I love to walk there around 7.30 when the sun is coming down and the sky turns into pink and purple cut by the dying sun that turns everything red. At that point, I can feel the oceanbreeze in my face and I realize that no matter how many problems I can have or no matter how hard my day could have been… I can always turn my head to the ocean, maybe seat beneath a palapa, take off my shoes and wet my feet in the warm water. I´m sure, no other place in the world can give you that indescribable feeling.

One of the best things about buying a lot in Pedregal de La Paz is to be able to design your dream house according to what you want, need or require with the best view in La Paz, BCS. Of course, since it´s a gated community and we have CCR´s you must follow the constructions guidelines. The main purpose of it is to protect everybody´s interest and investments.
So after you pick the lot that suits you best you can start thinking on how many great things you can do. You can start working on the house floorplan´s either if is your own architect or someone we can recommend to you as well. Make an appointment with the Architectural committee so they can be reviewed once you get approval (and the permits, of course) you´re ready to build (except for the 4th phase, which will be ready by november 2008)!

On June 13th Pedregal de La Paz Developers, along with the Coldwell Banker Riveras sales and marketing team and Broker Leticia Diaz Rivera, proudly opened the doors to the first unit from Villas Aguamarina Pedregal residences. At the grand opening, on one of those magical nights at the beginning of another of the magnificent summers that residents in the south of Baja enjoy, we greeted the outstanding attendance of 120 guests, local developers, realtors, notaries and current and future clients.

It was a lightly breezy and sunny Friday afternoon and the Pedregal de La Paz staff worked very hard to get everything in the house beautifully ready and exactly in the right place. The more you scrutinized the villa, the more inviting it looked. The moment you walked into it, it felt already as your home: so cozy, so friendly, so naturally illuminated and tastefully decorated with an inviting view to the spacious pool. Water mirrors next to the main entrance provided the calming sounds of water throughout the interior. All these different elements combined to offer a uniquely peaceful characteristic that embraces you day and night.

The house itself feels spacious but not immense, modern but still Mexican through its use of colors and materials while it offers you a primary residence home, a vacation getaway or a retirement sanctuary. Features such as expansive windows, a perfectly sized kitchen and laundry room, and a family room that can be upgraded to a guest room, complement each other on the first floor. The appliances in the kitchen are top of the line: Electrolux and Whirlpool. The private terraces on the second floor invite you to admire nice views of the Sea of Cortez, as well the relaxing Jacuzzi off the master suite.

The decoration, if I may say, was sublime and all the attendants agreed with me.
Malis Reynoso, from Simmetria Décor Store, proposed a daring idea of colors, textures and exquisite details that beautifully dressed each room in the house. The villas do not come furnished so that every owner can design their own living spaces to their desires, yet Mrs. Reynoso’s idea of decoration is clever, bold and if you wish it, she can help you design your own paradise.

After that brief introduction to what the villa offers, let me give you the highlights of the opening event. Pedregal de La Paz agents received each guest as they arrived and privately toured them throughout the villa. On the patio they were invited to have a glass of wine, to enjoy the sunset and live music, and to consider the loveliness of this place. A Cuban trio playing outside gave a fresh touch to the atmosphere. As a special delight to the guests, a chocolate fountain with strawberries and marshmallows brought the perfect touch of sweetness. Touchiers lit the path around the pool and as the daylight faded, an intimate surrounding embraced us.

At the sunset, Javier Manterola, Project Director of Pedregal de La Paz, spoke to the guests thanking them for their presence. He then shared with all of us how Don Manuel Diaz Rivera’s dreams become real everyday at Pedregal, how happy owners are finishing their homes in the lot they previously bought, how Villas Aguamarina represents an opportunity for starting families, and how the lifestyle in our development can simply offer la pura vida.
So after a while, it was time to say good bye. My best moment? When we all gathered for the staff picture, 20 of us total! At that time I was so pleased to see all our efforts giving such a great result, especially when it came to the satisfied comments by all our guests and friends. I can´t deny it, I´m so happy to be part of this wonderful dream!

Before getting started I want to thank all my friends and colleagues who have been very supportive with my new blog. I do appreciate all your positive comments and feedback, hopefully you will be dropping some lines on it soon. But yes, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.Since I moved to La Paz, about 4 years ago, I have encountered in so many ways with its wildlife. Sometimes it´s good, sometimes...well, better not recall that. At the end, it has all resulted in a great lifetime experience, eventhough I´m not close to be as fearless and adventurer as Steve Irwin (the unforgetable crocodile hunter). Anyway, let me share with you one of my best wildlife experiences.
2 days Prior to our Villas Aguamarina Pedregal presentation I was at Pedregal sales office when Rodrigo Aguilar, the administrator, came into the office very excited and some of the workers where speaking loudly outside. I left my seat and went after Rodrigo to ask him what was all that about.There are 2 racoons on the top of a palm tree! --he answered with a smile.Really? where? -- I asked, curious.At the entrance, next to the main gate. C´mon. I´ll show you. --said

Rodrigo while we both went outside with a brief stop to my desk to grab my camera and crossed the coblestone street while we headed to the main gate.When we arrived, there where 3 or 4 workers under the palm tree with their cel phones pointing up. It was about 4 pm and the sunlight was all over us, but it didn´t stopped us. I pulled the camera out of its bag and focus to the top. I could only see a big furball, no head, no ears, no nose, nothing. So I had to wait about 5 minutes until I could get a clear shot. Finally, one of the racoons decided he no longer wanted to be shy and pulled out his head, so I assumed it was Mr. Racoon protecting Mrs. Racoon. I walked around the palm tree, I zoomed in, zoomed out, called Mr. Racoon by its first name and the picture you see above is the result. You be the judge.
But they are not our only visitors. Our director of project, Javier Manterola, has become close friends to a woodpecker that likes to visit him at his very own window office and of course, KNOCK! as hard and loud as he can. Needless to say, he doesn´t always receives a warm welcome. (Sorry Javier!). If you´re visiting us at the office and suddenly hear strange noises like a door cracking do not worry at all. It´s our feathered friend.
Sometimes Woody (as I called him) decides to fly to greener pastors (or betters windows, actually) and flies directly to the main entrance or the sales office window or our big cardon in the backyard where he gets his sunbath. Unfortunately, Woody is more shy than the Racoon family and he hasn´t allowed me to take a picture of him, but..patience, just one of this days and I`ll be able to share it with you.
And sometimes, specially on the spring, when the flowers are blooming next to the pool here at the office, at the entrance, I see hummingbirds flying over the buganvillea (bugambilia in spanish). Its beautiful fucsia colors contrast with the green or the lavender of the hummingbirds while they shake gently the flowers as they come and goes quickly and very hard to catch in the camera as well. So I do enjoy every precious moment I have and when I´m able to see this precious and priceless moments.
This 4 habitants are part of my personal amenities working here in Pedregal de La Paz. I love the view, the ocean breeze, the sunsets and made some new feathered or furred friends as well. As a good friend told me once, life just can`t get any better than this.

Culinary tour around La Paz
I have to confess that when it comes to dining in La Paz I smile since I find eating to be one of the greatest pleasures in life (which I think you all will agree with me). It doesn't matter if it's a fancy restaurant or the all time traditional tacos stand, if you're visiting town for the first time, or if you like to come back to your vacation home, just follow the Mexican's taco place wisdom: "The more crowded the place, the better the food!"

Below is just a brief list of all the best places to eat in La Paz. Whether it is breakfast time or a lunch meeting, the city offers a wide selection of restaurants that will please even the most demanding tastes.

Let's just say I just got up from bed and on my way to the office, so I probably stop by at the Exquisitio Café in front of the Malecon to get my daily caffeine dose and, why not? A delicious freshly prepared turkey baguette and maybe a carrot or double chocolate cake for my colleagues in the office. I will sit down of course at the tables outside while my order is being prepared because it's always sunny and fresh in the morning and sometimes you can even see dolphins on the bay. Anywhere along the Malecon, the view is always sublime and the smell of the freshly brewed coffee will definitely awaken your soul.

If I have some extra time, I will go to the Baja Biscuits, located in the corner of 5 de Mayo and Belisario Dominguez, just around the block from Coldwell Banker Riveras office. Baja Biscuits opened recently and it's attended by a family and no matter if you speak English or Spanish, they will speak your language so you can feel comfortable the moment you get in. Try the cinnamon rolls and the burritos and be sure to sit outside to take in the colonial surroundings of the area.

If my morning is free and I'm with my family or friends, I would go to La Terraza, at the street level of Hotel La Perla, which is one of La Paz's most classical hotels. While you're seated there, you'll enjoy the blue waters of the Sea of Cortez while waiting for your meal. Don't forget to try the toast with the unique papaya marmalade. Since I know you'll be more than satisfied after you eat, go to the hotel lobby and look at the photo exhibits of old La Paz, some of which date from the early 1900's.

Capri, a waterfront restaurant located on the Vista Coral plaza at the edge of the Malecon, offers a variety of coffee and drinks and a stunning view of the Malecon itself, tip to tip. Sometimes the water is so calm that it resembles a mirror sparked by the boats.

For a Sunday morning, these are the top 3 options:

El Aura at The Seven Crown hotel overlooking the bay from the 5th floor, featuring international cuisine.
La Concha Hotel Restaurant, the only beachfront hotel in La Paz, just across the street from Pedregal de La Paz.
El Zarape Restaurant with a very personal VIP service by its owner Lorena Hinojosa. Mexican buffet cuisine and great Mexican ambiance with live music. There is also a Décor store with beautiful arts craft for sale.
Moving from the essential breakfasts to the ultimate lunches, don't forget about the old time favorites:

Bismarkcito. Located next to the Coldwell Banker Riveras office with succulent and fresh seafood in an al fresco atmosphere. Great fish and shrimp tacos are everyone's favorite. And get ready to sing and dance with the norteño music played live.

Moyeyos. If you have been spending the day out fishing, Moyeyo's is the place to go! Directly from Sinaloa the owner came with his secret recipes for fish, clams, oysters, shrimps... you name it. Take your catch of the day and they will prepare it very Moyeyo's style. Anita Ogrim, a Coldwell Banker Riveras Sales Associate from Los Barriles Office, comes to visit the city quite often and always goes to this place without hesitating.

Sushi Zone. Just opened, located 5 minutes away from the Malecon. This 2 story sushi bar and martini lounge brings fresh ideas in a very Japanese style. If you come here late evening, go to the lounge and try its different martini selection.

Dragon de Oro. Resembling part of the Chinese background characteristic of La Paz's downtown area, you'll find this traditional restaurant becoming part of a successful express food chain in the city. After eating, grab your fortune cookie and go to the gourmet café on the first floor and amuse yourself with my top recommendation, a Mocha Lavazza.

2 Mares. Also located in the Malecon, this is an old but excellent one; this is the place where the most traditional families gather on Sundays for family events.

Rancho Viejo. If you are a big taco fan please prepare yourself to taste a local legend. Rancho Viejo is located on Marques de Leon street, just one block away from the Malecon and with an outdoor grill. Try the juicy and tender arrachera tacos or stuffed potatoes with meat, melted butter, cream, cheese and corn grains. This is a low profile restaurant... but quite affordable as well. Open 24 hours.

Last, but not least, here are some suggestions to wrap up your day in the hottest and most popular spots in town. You'll never know who you're going to be seated with!

La Pazta. Fresh and authentic Italian-Swiss restaurant personally managed by its owners Norbert & Saul. Let me tell you something from personal experience, no matter how bad your day was, if you decide to go here they will do their best to make you feel better (even if it is just a smile). Top recommendation: lasagna, no questions asked.

3 Virgenes. Young and innovative atmosphere with a Mexican gourmet menu by its chef Jesus Chavez and wife Maria Jose in a modern but still traditional décor with a great wine selection and personal customer attention. Reservations might be requested in the touristic high season. Perfect and intimate for 2.

Buffalo's Bbq. One of La Paz's favorite selections also managed by its owner, Carlos Valdes. This restaurant is a sure call (ask them to go into the wine cellar to pick up the wine of your choice). Great burgers and juicy steaks are perfect for a casual dinner or business meeting.

La Boheme. Visiting this restaurant in the downtown area is quite an experience with a Mexican-French menu in nostalgic hacienda style ambiance. Be sure to dine in the backyard and enjoy La Paz's famous sunset under romantic candle lights.

Keep in mind that most of the restaurants accept Visa & Mastercard, have parking spaces, provide wi-fi internet and dress code is casual. With so many options for a great meal, no wonders La Paz's dining is not an ordinary experience.

Around 1972 the founder of the company where I work, Arquitecto Manuel Diaz Rivera had the vision to develop one of Baja´s finest and most exclusive residential communities, Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas. Since then, overlooking the growing fishing village that would become one of the top places to live the pure life.

In 1996, Don Manuel decided it was about time to share his life vision in La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, so he bought to the state government 150 hectares and started Pedregal de La Paz, starting to sell magnificent water view lot on the same Pedregal lifestyle but with much better paceño amenities.

So imagine an exclusive and private gated community, add the sumptuous bay views, a country club, commercial area. New rules that provide stability and legal certainty for all foreign real estate investments in Mexico were put into effect in 1993. These rules are apparently not widely understood, and have been confused further by recent situations that predated and were not covered by these rules.
